Pompeii and Herculaneum
|
At dawn, on August 24th of the year 79, on the Vesuvius a huge cloud appeared: it was the first sign of the frightful eruption that destroyed Pompeii, Herculaneum and the other towns of the area.
We have a report of this eruption, thanks to Pliny the Younger, who tells us of a dark cloud that covered the area, and from the cloud fell burning ashes and stones, while the sulphurous gas infected the air. The towns disappeared, buried under at least 6 meters of ash, and with them two thousand inhabitants died.
Pompeii and Herculaneum were then completely forgotten; but in 1748 the first excavations began in Pompeii. In Herculaneum they began officially in 1738 and already in 1942 nearly all the area was discovered and restored.
Today you can visit Pompeii and Herculaneum, that are as they were when the destiny stopped the course of their history. The archaeological site of Pompeii and Herculaneum has been listed by Unesco among the monuments of World Heritage.
